General information
The course covers routing at the functional level in the circuit and packet
switched networks. Especially we will learn about the routing algoritms
and some of the routing protocols that form the foundation of the Internet.
Staff
Lectures are held by Professor Raimo
Kantola and course assistant is M.Sc.
Mika Ilvesmäki, who takes care of the exercises, homework and
is responsible for web-pages and other practical issues.
-
Prof. Kantola's consulting hours: Wednesday 10 - 12; room G215
-
Mika Ilvesmäki: room SG227c, schedule appointment as needed or consult
via e-mail
Course registration
The students should register for the course via "topi".
In case of problems in using topi, send your registration information via
email to Mika Ilvesmäki
Schedule
-
First lecture on September 8th (wed)
-
Second lecture on September 14th from 8am to 10 am.
-
No lecture on September 21st and 22nd.
Lectures are given during the first half of the fall semester at tuesdays
in lecture hall F301 from 10am to noon and on wednesdays in lecture hall
H402 from 2pm to 4pm.
-
Lectures 1-2 includes routing in the circuit switched networks.
-
Lectures 3-7 includes routing in the internet.
Lecture slides(in pdf-format) and mainly in Finnish:
Exercises
-
The course contains 5 exercises. Exercises are distributed in English.
-
Exercise time is tuesday 8.30-10 lecture hall F301 and the exercises lectures
are given in Finnish.
-
The first exercise is on Tuesday September 14th (from 10am to noon).
-
There will be no exercise on Tuesday September 21st.
You can get extra points for exam from exercises:
The additional points are determined by the follwing equation:
additional_points= 0,08* percentage_of_correct_exercises -4.
If you neglect the exercises altogether you get 4 points reduction
in your exam score. To be able to start from zero you have correctly solve
50% of the exercises. The successfull completion of all exercises results
you 4 additional points to the exam.
You must return the exercises BEFORE the exercise lecture.

On integrated routing and switching there is a reasonably good book out
by Bruce Davie, Paul Doolan and Yakov Rekhter called Switching
in IP networks published by Morgan
& Kaufman with ISBN:1-55860-505-3. For the examination
of this course you should read chapters 2, 4 and 5. Additional reading
should cover chapters 7 and 8.
