Current Research Projects
Teletraffic Theory
The work of the teletraffic theory group covers a broad range of teletraffic
problems arising in modern telecommunications networks such as the Internet,
ATM, WDM and mobile networks. The research is mainly directed to the following
areas:

Basic teletraffic studies
-
Studies of various queueing models and development of methods for the performance
analysis and optimization of such systems.

A program library Qlib
of traffic theoretical functions.

Traffic management
-
Traffic and resource management schemes for the provision of a given QoS
in the networks; particular attention is given to schemes such as IntServ,
DiffServ and MPLS
-
Traffic modelling and measurements
-
Models to characterise the traffic in the Internet and in the mobile networks;
measurement of real traffic in the networks in order to collect statistical
data on which the models can be based
-
Some measurement results on the modem
pool of TKK.

Networking Technology
Networking Technology covers both circuit and packet switching technology
- i.e. both traditional telecommunications networks and the Internet and
other packet networks.
Networking Technology is interested in the technology, engineering,
functional, information and enterprise aspects of the functional areas
of communications services and switching such as

signalling in circuit and packet based networks,
-
routing in circuit and packet switched networks including Internet routing
protocols,
-
methods, mechanisms, algorithms for internetworking
-
performance and quality of service
-
interworking of networks and services,
-
fault-tolerance techniques,
-
switching matrix technology and
-
telecommunications product development.
Prevailing technology trends in this area are convergence of the networking
technologies, tremendous growth of the Internet and Mobile networks.
The current project in this area is IRoNet
(Intelligent Routing Network) jointly with the Teletraffic Group.
The DECICOM project focuses on peer-to-peer services in mobile networks.
The INTERO project focuses on interoperability
in numbering and addressing between IP- and circuit switched telephony.
The MobileMan is a three year EU
project on Ad Hoc Networking.
A recently completed research project, called IMELIO
focused on

traffic classification
-
class and constraint based routing
-
interoperable numbering infrastructure, and
telephony signalling over IP.
Networking Business
Our work on Networking Business covers the application of economic theory on
a variety of techno-economic problems emerging in network access and services. The focus
of on-going projects is on new public services based on Internet and mobile
technologies. We improve understanding and create knowledge in the following areas:

Competition and regulation in mobile services (e.g. roaming, virtual operators,
service pricing, handset bundling, business models).

Feasibility of wireless access technologies (e.g. traffic forecasting, cost analysis,
business simulation).
